Water Softeners, Iron Filters, and Whole-Home Treatment

Wisconsin has some of the hardest groundwater in the country, and a substantial number of homes in the Hartford service area are on private wells with their own collection of mineral, iron, and sulfur issues. Even municipal water in this region runs hard. The result is the same in either case: scale buildup on fixtures, dingy laundry, premature appliance failure, and water that does not feel or taste the way it should.

What Water Conditioning Solves

Different water has different problems. The most common issues we address in this region:

• Hardness (calcium and magnesium): the main reason fixtures get crusty and water heaters fail early. Universal across Wisconsin.
• Iron: the orange-brown staining you see in toilets, tubs, and laundry. Common on wells.
• Sulfur (hydrogen sulfide): the rotten-egg smell, especially in hot water. Common on wells.
• Manganese: black staining on fixtures and laundry. Often paired with iron on Wisconsin wells.
• Sediment: visible particles, sand, or grit. Common on shallower wells or after well work.
• Tannins: yellowish or brownish water from organic matter. Less common but occurs in some areas.
• pH issues: acidic water that corrodes copper pipes, leaving blue-green stains.

Water Softeners

A water softener is the foundational piece of equipment for most Wisconsin homes. Softeners use ion exchange to remove hardness minerals, replacing them with a small amount of sodium (or potassium for sodium-restricted households).

What a softener does for your home:

• Extends water heater life dramatically
• Eliminates scale buildup on faucets, shower heads, and dishes
• Reduces detergent and soap use
• Makes laundry softer, brighter, and last longer

We size softeners based on actual household water use and hardness level, not just by household count. An undersized softener works too hard and fails early. An oversized softener wastes salt. We get it right the first time.

Iron Filters

If you are on a well and your toilets, tubs, or laundry show orange staining, you have iron. A water softener can handle low iron levels, but anything above the softener’s capacity needs a dedicated iron filter ahead of the softener. We install:

• Air injection (AIO) iron filters: oxygen-based, no chemicals, regenerate by drawing in air
• Chemical-free iron filters using catalytic media for moderate iron loads
• Sulfur-and-iron combo systems when both issues are present

Installation includes the filter, the bypass valves, the drain line, and any plumbing modifications needed to integrate it with your existing setup.

Whole-Home Filtration and Reverse Osmosis

For homes that want cleaner water beyond softening, additional options include:

• Sediment pre-filters to protect equipment and improve water clarity
• Whole-home carbon filtration for chlorine, taste, and odor on municipal water
• UV sterilization for wells with bacterial concerns
• Under-sink reverse osmosis (RO) for drinking water at a single tap, removing 95+% of dissolved solids
• Whole-home RO for severe water issues where every fixture needs treatment

Service and Salt Delivery

Once the system is installed, we offer ongoing service for water softeners and conditioning equipment:

• Resin replacement when the bed is exhausted (typically 10 to 15 years)
• Valve service and replacement
• Filter media replacement on iron filters and carbon systems
• RO membrane replacement
• Annual system check

Wisconsin Well Owners

If you are on a well, water testing is something to do periodically regardless of whether you have treatment equipment. Wisconsin DNR recommends annual testing for bacteria and nitrates, with broader mineral panels every few years. We can pull samples and submit them to a certified lab as part of a service visit.
